Artist Profile

Annie Luke Turner's artistic practice emerges from memories and emotions evoked by place and space. Based in England's Lake District, she also maintains a studio in Hull, allowing her to engage with both rural and urban landscapes. Her creative process begins with exploration — walks, drives, and journeys that inspire emotional responses to locations — and she sketches from memory before developing work through layered mark-making. Her childhood was shaped by parents who were climbers, taking her camping in Wales and Scotland, and her uncle Leslie Peter Wenham was a prominent York archaeologist; this heritage manifests in her layered work, exploring traces of history beneath surfaces. Her dyslexia, she has said, has strengthened her vivid imagination and creative perception. She holds a BA (Hons) in Fine Art — Painting, First Class, from the University of Gloucestershire (2004). Her work has been selected for Manchester Art Fair and Borders Art Fair, and she won the Hampstead School of Art Exhibition Prize at the 2025 Women in Art Prize.
