About Us.
An innovative initiative dedicated to celebrating and empowering female artists from all backgrounds and disciplines.
Women in Art exists to support, mentor, and promote women artists while building a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable art world.
We are a community-driven, non-profit platform dedicated to championing women’s voices in art — recognising that true equality requires intersectional advocacy that addresses the layered barriers of gender, race, and cultural background.
Formerly known as The Holly Bush Painting Prize, this initiative was started by Sue Ecclestone, who established the foundation for recognising women’s artistic talents. In 2023, Sue passed leadership to Gabrielle du Plooy, the current Managing Director.
Now in its 9th year, the Women In Art Prize is open to all emerging women artists that are Painters, Photographers, Sculptors, Illustrators & Printmakers living and working in the UK, with an awarded prize for one Overseas Artist.
Managing Director
Gabrielle du Plooy leads the Women in Art Prize with a background in art curation and management. She has devoted her career to advancing emerging and established female artists.
Under her direction, the organisation evolved from The Holly Bush Painting Prize into a recognised platform celebrating artistic excellence while fostering connections among artists, curators, and enthusiasts.
We Champion Women Artists
By providing a vital resource hub featuring artist interviews, historical perspectives on women in art, and showcases of emerging talent.
We Promote Visibility
Putting women artists in the public eye through our annual Women in Art Award and ongoing digital platform. Each year, we select 22 visionaries poised to reshape the art world.
We Believe in Transformation
In the power of art to change lives, break down barriers, and create a more equal playing field for all artists.
We Give Recognition
Celebrating the achievements of both established artists who have shaped art history and emerging voices bringing innovative perspectives.
Community Interest Company
We operate as a not-for-profit Community Interest Company (CIC), ensuring our mission remains focused on impact rather than profit.
Intersectional Advocacy
We acknowledge that correcting gender imbalances in the art world requires recognising the systemic barriers that intersect with gendered experience. We are committed to allyship and championing a plurality of voices.
Diversity & Inclusion
We encourage artists from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds to enter the Women In Art Award. We are creating a diverse and inclusive community where all women artists can find support, resources, and inspiration.
We cultivate a vibrant community through events, exhibitions, and partnerships creating opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, and professional development.
“As the Women in Art Prize exhibition comes to a close, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to both of WIAP. It has been an unforgettable experience to take part, and I truly appreciate all the effort and care you put into organising this meaningful event.”
