Sofia Ruiz
Sofía Ruiz (b. 1982, San José, Costa Rica) is a Latin American visual artist whose practice blends realism with heavily textured surfaces to examine the emotional and psychological dimensions of memory, identity, and otherness. Her childhood was marked by her mother's amnesia and grandmother's battle with Alzheimer's — an experience that profoundly shaped her exploration of false memories, loss of identity, and the uncanny. She studied Painting and Printmaking at the School of Fine Arts of the University of Costa Rica and holds a Master's in Education. Her work has been shown at institutions including Barcelona's MEAM (2024), Paris' Palais de Tokyo, and the Museum of Costa Rican Art, with over 35 exhibitions across Latin America, the United States, Europe, and Asia. She won the Best Overseas Artist Prize at the 2024 Women in Art Prize.
