The Women in Art Prize is delighted to announce its expansion into Mexico City with the launch of a dedicated Artist Development Award for women artists living and working across Mexico. The initiative will culminate in a major exhibition during Mexico City Art Week in 2027.
Since its inception, the Women in Art Prize has been committed to creating meaningful opportunities for women artists beyond the award itself. Our focus has always been on building careers through visibility, mentorship, professional development and long-term support. Expanding into Mexico is a natural extension of that mission.
Rather than establishing a permanent international branch, we believe in working alongside organisations that are already making a genuine contribution to their local creative communities. For 2027, we are proud to partner with Synonym Gallery, whose programme champions emerging contemporary practice within Mexico.

Together we will present the Women in Art Prize × Synonym Gallery Artist Development Award, creating a platform that celebrates exceptional talent while providing practical opportunities for artistic growth.
Supporting the Next Generation of Women Artists
The award has been designed to support one outstanding emerging woman artist based in Mexico through a programme that extends far beyond a traditional exhibition. The recipient will receive:
Funding and support to realise a significant public art commission within Mexico City. A solo exhibition presented at Synonym Gallery during Mexico City Art Week 2027. Ongoing mentorship, portfolio development and professional guidance from the Women in Art Prize team. International exposure through the Women in Art platform, connecting the artist with collectors, curators and institutions beyond Mexico.
Working With Local Communities
One of the principles that has always guided the Women in Art Prize is collaboration. We are not interested in arriving as outside voices, but in working with organisations that already understand and nurture their local creative landscape.
Synonym Gallery will continue its independent programme throughout the year, and our partnership is built on mutual respect, shared values and a commitment to supporting artists where they are. By combining local knowledge with an international network, we hope to create opportunities that have a lasting impact long after Art Week has ended.
The Women in Art Prize has never simply been about winning an award. It is about opening doors that remain open. Every expansion we make is driven by the same question: how can we create meaningful opportunities that genuinely help artists build sustainable careers? Mexico has an extraordinary community of women artists, and we are incredibly excited to work alongside Synonym Gallery to support and celebrate that talent.
