Venetta Nicole is a Caribbean artist based in London whose practice explores abstraction and its relationship to everyday life. Working across painting, portraiture and sculptural forms, she uses bold colour, shape, line and texture to explore emotion, identity and human connection. Her practice also investigates the relationship between music and visual expression, translating rhythm, movement and emotional resonance into repeated marks, looping lines and bold colour. Influenced by architecture and design, including Bauhaus and Brutalist principles, Nicole creates expressive works that invite connection, reflection and sensory engagement. Venetta Nicole is a London-based Caribbean artist whose practice explores abstraction as a language through which the complexities of everyday life can be understood and felt. Through colour, shape, line and texture, she creates expressive, non-representational works that explore emotional and social realities. Her abstract portraiture, rendered through an expressionist approach, examines the experiences and roles of young men in contemporary society. Rather than depicting likeness, Nicole captures presence, vulnerability and psychological depth through gesture and form, inviting reflection on identity, perception and connection. Alongside painting, Nicole’s sculptural practice explores the intersection of architecture and abstraction. Her wooden sculptures visually echo the geometric language of De Stijl, while also drawing from deconstructivism, Bauhaus and Brutalism. Through cutting, layering and assembling individual components, she creates structures defined by geometry, balance, rhythm and spatial relationships. While the ordered qualities of modernist design inform their visual language, Nicole’s intuitive process introduces fragmentation, texture and spontaneity, creating a dialogue between order and disruption. A strong interest in the public realm underpins her practice, with a commitment to creating work that fosters connection between individuals, communities and their environments. Born in the UK in 1985, Nicole graduated from Middlesex University in 2007. She won the Women in Art Prize Susan Angoy Award (2022) and was a finalist for the Dubel Art Prize (2025).
