Still Life with Marigolds (Self-Portrait)

Leena McCall trained at the Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence. Still Life with Marigolds, Self-Portrait, is the first painting in her ongoing series Unseen, which explores the invisibility of women in midlife, the loss of identity through motherhood, and the labour that goes unnoticed precisely because it is expected. She lives and works in England. Still Life with Marigolds, Self-Portrait, depicts a woman on a bathroom floor in yellow rubber gloves, holding a phone. A life made small, painted large, it is a still life of domestic labour and the mental load, her gaze turned inward and withheld from the viewer. She is not still.
